This is a municipality with many possibilities; here is something for everyone. You can find both indoor- and outdoors activities; nature reserves, an adventure center, sport centers, a cinema, a tennis court, an ice hockey rink and shopping. Everything you need for a good vacation!
Vårgårda is situated in an area of natural beauty. You will find many good possibilities for different kinds of leisure activities. There are many bathing and fishing lakes and many nice areas for country walks. In wintertime there is an illuminated ski-track, a ski slope with a lift and an ice hockey rink. For indoor activities there are several sport centers and an indoor tennis court. Tånga Hed is the biggest sport center in Vårgårda; here you find the adventure center with beautiful nature, camping and many activities.
The only international bicycle competition in Sweden, Scandinavia Open, takes place in Vårgårda. The competition is settled during a couple of in the summer.
At Vårgårda airfield you can try out parachute jump. Here the car fanatic can also watch street racing with fast cars and a lot of people.
If you, during your visit to Vårgårda, want to try out golf, there is a new golf course and driving range under construction that will be ready during spring 2008. You can also play miniature golf at Tånga Hed. For those interested in horses we can offer you and your family to rent a horse and cart for a half or a whole day and enjoy the beautiful nature. You can also enjoy our indoor swimming bath, massage, sauna and solarium.
To meet the present cultural life there is a theatre, a library and a cinema. Vårgårda theatre society puts up shows at Kulturen, where you apart from theatre can watch concerts, dance performances, comedy shows and a lot more. You can also visit different art exhibitions arranged by Vårgårda art society in Gallery 33 — Kungsgatan 33, Vårgårda.
A form of the name Vårgårda has been found in a will on parchment from 1420. Later it developed into Waalgardha which means “the yards where you keep watch".
Vårgårda is a place of great cultural historical interest. Within the municipality there are no less than 17 parishes with churches from the 12th and 13th centuries. There are many traces of ancient times. The most remarkable one is the cist in Södra Härene.
Yxnås is a nature reserve with the intent to preserve the unexploited character of the area, by cultivation, haymaking and pastures. The changes in the landscape are modest compared to the transformation of agricultural landscapes in other areas during the last century. Mainly grass is cultivated as winter fodder for cattle and horses. Species under threat of extermination are sown with the crops and the annual haymaking contributes to the magnificent display of flowers.
Ljungås nature reserve belongs to our peasant culture dating centuries back, with carefully preserved houses, infields and pastures in the Ljungås´ forest. It was mentioned in the Land Book from 1613. Its present boundaries were established in the great distribution of land holdings in 1804.
The farm has come to life again through handicrafts using its own products as material. In some parts of the cultivable grounds, old time plants are grown. On the grazing ground, and in the forest, cows graze and in the pastures sheep keep the bushes away. The forest homestead of Ljungås is once more a living place and a unique example Swedish peasant culture.
The nature reserve was established in 1992 and is kept by the Ljungås trust which consists of the local authorities of Vårgårda, the Society for Nature Protection and the Forest Society.
Between Yxnås and Ljungås you have a marked walking-trail (11 km).
Vårgårda can offer flats, houses and building sites. Vårgårda Bostäder AB is the largest owner of flats. As a visitor you can stay at Vårgårda Wärdshus, Mikaelgården Hotel, Lagmansholms country estate or at Tånga Hed Youth Hostel.
Vårgårda Center is newly modernized with a new shopping street. The train and bus communication to Alingsås, Gothenburg and Borås are very good if you are looking for more shopping possibilities.
In Vårgårda there are today 1542 companies of which Autoliv Sverige AB, Autoflator AB, AB Gustavsberg, Doggy AB, Ancra ABT AB and Sundolitt AB are the biggest ones. Autoliv Sverige AB is a high-technological company within the car-safety area with a positive development. Doggy AB is the biggest producer of petfood in Sweden and is now working in large newly built premises. There are about 5500 people working in the area, spread out over the 1542 companies.
There is plenty of land intended for industries located close to E20. The next area to be used for establishments is the area between E20 and the airfield. The airfield is today privately owned. The activities consist of private aviation and parachute jumping.
The local authorities co-operates with the society of businessmen and the Photographic society of Vårgårda in the project "Center of Innovation" to promote economic life.
The citizen´s advice bureau "Drop In", has contributed to the service given to the inhabitants of the municipality. The reason for setting up a citizen´s advice bureau is that the inhabitants will have one place to go to with their questions and demands.
The municipality of Vårgårda was created by the realization of the local government boundary reform in 1952. The municipality is situated in the heart of Västergötland 65 km from Gothenburg (Göteborg) and 45 km from Trollhättan-Vänersborg and Borås respectively. The municipality has an area of 428 km2, which gives 26 inhabitants per km2.
The county road no 42 between Borås and Vänersborg intersects E20 just outside the population center. According to the plans of the government E20 will become a motor highway in the future.
The fact that Vårgårda is located at a road junction and is centrally situated in the province of Västergötland makes Vårgårda an interesting place for habitation as well as for the establishment of industries. In the region of West Sweden Vårgårda is an interesting heart point.
The Western Trunk Line goes through the municipality and many trains stop in Vårgårda. You can easily go by train to Stockholm, Gothenburg and Örebro.
Naturally the good communications contribute to the population growth. During the years of 1980-2008 the population of Vårgårda has increased from 9256 to 11000.

The Local Council is the highest decision making body. Through general elections every fourth year the 41 councilors are elected.
The council meets once a month as a rule. On each of these occasions a great number of items are to be decided upon. The items have been carefully prepared by the executive committee as well as by the employees.
The matters, which are discussed at council meetings, are questions, which have been put forward by a higher authority or by the local political parties. However, in Vårgårda an individual citizen can turn directly to the council with a proposal (Citizen´s proposal). The council meetings are public and the list of items is published in the daily paper.
